Ray Harold McCard, MD died Sunday, October 2, 2022, after a lengthy illness at Carlyle Place, in Macon, Georgia at the age of 88.

Dr. McCard was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Rosalyn Sandra Reeves on September 12, 2020. He  is survived by their four children and their spouses, Ray Harold McCard, Jr. ( Brenda) of Franklin, Tennessee, John Fleming McCard (Cynthia) of Richmond, Virginia, Sondralyn McCard Fackler (David Thompson) of Macon, and Lucinda McCard Simpson (William) of Gray; his brother, Wallace Jake Seay (Emilyn) of Spartanburg, North Carolina; and grandchildren, Florrie Patricia McCard, Clementine Inez McCard, Matilda Rosemond McCard, Rosalyn Simpson De Luna (Matthew), Emily Turner Fackler, William Russell Fackler, and Madelyn McCard Fackler.

Ray McCard was born on July 28, 1934, in Thomaston, Georgia to Homer Starling McCard, Sr. and Florrie Waller. His mother died in 1937 and his father remarried, Lucille Legg, who was a wonderful stepmother to Ray. He graduated from Manchester High School in 1952.  He attended Emory at Oxford and Emory University, graduating in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. Upon graduation from college, he married the love of his life, Rosalyn Sandra Reeves and they moved to Augusta where he attended the Medical College of Georgia graduating with his medical degree in 1961. Over the course of the next eight years the couple had four children. Dr. McCard was called to active duty as a Captain in the Air Force in 1964 serving for three years as the psychiatrist at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida. In 1966, he returned to Augusta where he taught in the Medical College of Georgia for the next three years. In 1968, he and his family moved to Macon, Georgia where he begin private practice as a psychiatrist for the next 37 years.

Dr. McCard took his oath as a physician seriously and led his life and practiced his art “in uprightness and honor”. He served as Medical Director of Coliseum Psychiatric Center from 1997 -2004 and was a member of their Board of Trustees from 1984-1995. He was on the inaugural faculty of Mercer University School of Medicine. His career was honored by the Bibb County Medical Society in 2011 when he received the Distinguished Service Award.

A long-time member of Christ Episcopal Church, he served the Vestry as Junior and Senior Warden in the 1970’s.  He was also, active many years as a member of the Rotary Club. He and his wife enjoyed collecting antiques as well as opening their former home at 1231 Jefferson Terrace for historic tours throughout the 1970’s and early 1980’s. In his later years, Dr. McCard took up woodworking and became adept at making Windsor Back Chairs and enjoyed taking classes at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, North Carolina.

Some of the first in their families to attend college, Dr. McCard and his late wife, Rosalyn, ensured that their children had wonderful educational experiences and the opportunity to achieve their professional goals as an attorney, priest, physician, and teacher. His children are grateful for the opportunities that they provided, and the high standards set for them. They are also grateful for his selfless dedication in providing for his family, and the support he gave them throughout the years.

A funeral is scheduled at Christ Episcopal Church in Macon, Georgia, Saturday, November 5, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. with The Reverend Cynthia Knapp officiating.  Interment will be in the Church Memorial Garden with a reception to follow in the Cloister Room. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Christ Church, 582 Walnut Street, Macon, GA 31201, or the charity of their choice.
