Peggy Anne Smith Pittman

August 9, 1940 — May 4, 2026

Peggy Anne Smith Pittman, 85, of Macon, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 4, 2026.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at Mulberry United Methodist Church, with Reverends Jack Varnell and Creede Hinshaw officiating. The family will greet friends for a time of visitation following the service. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery.

Peggy was born on August 9, 1940, in Butler, Georgia, to the late W.R. and Agnes Smith. Her father was a Methodist minister, and as a child Peggy journeyed with her family throughout South Georgia. His ministry, example, and unwavering faith shaped Peggy deeply and became a foundation that sustained her throughout her life.

She graduated from Bacon County High School and went on to attend Wesleyan College, where she earned her degree in 1962. Peggy devoted twenty years of her life to education, teaching at Mattie Wells Elementary School in the Jones County School system. Teaching was more than a career—it was a calling she truly loved.

Peggy was gifted in many ways. She had a lifelong love of sewing and proudly made most of the clothes she wore. She delighted in nature, especially watching the birds in her backyard sanctuary. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, and reading, with a particular fondness for historical novels, especially those rooted in Georgia history. An avid traveler, Peggy especially loved the mountains. Her favorite journey was a trip to Europe with her husband, Carlton—an adventure filled with treasured memories.

A longtime member and Sunday School teacher of Cross Keys United Methodist Church, Peggy later transferred her membership to Mulberry United Methodist Church, where her faith continued to grow. Church life was central to her spiritual journey, and her gentle, loving spirit blessed her church family and all who knew her.

Peggy embodied the words of Proverbs 31: “A woman of noble character … she is worth far more than rubies. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.”

Her greatest loves were her faith and her family. Peggy shared 65 years of marriage with her beloved husband, Carlton W. Pittman, and together they raised two sons: James “Jim” C. Pittman (Sharon) of Kathleen, Georgia, and John W. Pittman (Karen) of Townsend, Georgia. She also cherished her six grandchildren and three great‑grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy.

In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her brother, Roy L. Smith.

Peggy will be remembered for her quiet strength, steadfast faith, and the gracious love she extended to everyone she met.
