Clovis Patricia “Patty’ Cown Burnam (February 19, 1933) of Macon, Georgia returned to her Saviour’s side on April 26th, 2026, at the age of 93 in Macon, Georgia. Patty is preceded in death by her husband of twenty-four years, Robert ‘Bob’ Burnam and her son, Michael Allan Maddox. She is survived by her children, Dr. Spencer Fleetwood Maddox, III, and Amy Maddox Bean (Rusty); her stepchildren, Robert Scott Burnam (Elizabeth) and Venita Burnam Roberts; grandchildren Kristin Bean Long (Josh), Taylor Maddox (Kara), Jessica Bean Williams (Matt), Austin Maddox, Reeves Maddox (Marah), Macy Maddox Davis (Will), Rebecca Bean Minarovich (Patrick), Rachel Bean Harlow (Bobby), Sarah Bean Spikes (Alex), Hunter Bean, Austin Bean, Jordan Burnam, Cody Roberts and Marion Roberts Brantley (Chantry); as well as eighteen great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Born in Devereux, Georgia to parents Golden Carl and Lola Langley Cown, Patty was the second-to-youngest child of ten brothers and sisters, all of whom preceded her in death. Patty grew up during the Great Depression and a World War. Hearing her stories of her childhood truly felt like time-travel: a place where your mother heats potatoes to keep your feet warm at night, only to be cooled and eaten for breakfast in the morning, or listening to President Franklin D Roosevelt speak over a crackling radio about the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Speaking of FDR: Patty loved to tell the story of when they lived in Warm Springs, Georgia, the President held little Patricia on his lap as he gave a speech from the train caboose. She was a graduate of both Miller High School (1950) and Georgia College and State University (1978). Another story Patty loved to share was when she rediscovered herself in her forties - going back to college and becoming an IRS agent in South Florida. She later returned to Georgia to be closer to her family.
An avid learner, Patty put her skills into great use in the Daughters of the American Revolution, fulfilling the roles of Furnishing Chairman at Meadow Garden and as Regent of the Mary Hammond Washington Chapter. This love of history carried on in Patty’s everyday life as she was a collector and refurbisher of antiques, owning and operating an antique business with her husband, Bob. Patty was the quintessential Southern lady with a myriad of skills. As a teenager, she taught herself to play the piano and served as a church pianist in various rural Methodist congregations throughout Georgia. Later as an adult, she sang in the choir at Wesleyan Drive Baptist Church.
Patty loved her family, taking great pride in how much her family had grown with each addition of grand and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed making holidays and birthdays magical: at Christmastime, she would put up seven different Christmas trees throughout her house. Backyard birthday parties, knitted scarves on Christmas Eve, or even a warm bowl of vegetable soup and cornbread after school — she enjoyed caring for the people in her life. Patty could be found in her garden cultivating beautiful blooms, in her kitchen making the best pound cake in the world, or in her screened porch enjoying the sunshine. Patty knew the value of celebrating the small things in life. Always grateful for the Lord’s presence and providence in her life, Patty openly shared her thankfulness for His continued care over her and her family. We take comfort in knowing that Patty has been reunited with her son Michael, her husband Bob, and with her Lord.
