Nell Lister Watson Newcomer passed away peacefully on Monday, March 31, 2025, at the age of 103. Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Sardis-Heard Funeral Home, 6125 Houston Road, Macon, GA 31217 with Reverend Sam Lamback, Jr. officiating. The family will greet friends a half hour prior to the service at Sardis-Heard. Private entombment will be held at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Methodist Home for Children and Youth, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon, Georgia 31204.
Nell was born on November 14, 1921, in Laurens County, Georgia to the late Charles Edgar Lister and "Evie" Lena Floyd Lister. Nell attended Berry College in Rome, Georgia before returning home to help on the farm. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, she worked at the C&S Bank in Macon. Nell was a fine business lady and owned one of the first Handy Andy stores in Macon.
She was President of the Macon Women's Club and was a Duplicate Bridge State Champion. She enjoyed playing the harmonica and singing with a group in Fitzgerald, and on Sunday afternoons she enjoyed fishing on the bank of a pond for bream and white perch. She also had a large repertoire of jokes she loved to tell. Nell was a wonderful homemaker and cook known for her fried cornbread and creamed corn.
Nell was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Fitzgerald, Georgia. She had a huge heart and gave back to her family, friends, and community. Anyone who knew her was blessed by her presence and will cherish all of the special loving memories.
Nell is predeceased by her first husband, Andrew William Watson, Sr., her second husband, Charlie Alfred Newcomer, Jr., her siblings Kimper Knight, Deloris Tucker, Gladys Carter, Fred Lister, Edgar Lister, Dewell (D.A.) Lister, Gene Lister, Quinton (Bo) Lister, Jack Lister, and Croal Lister.
Nell is survived by her children Andy Watson, Jr. (Louise), Patty Kovacevich; her grandchildren Andrea Black (Spencer), Courtney Kovacevich, Cassie Colgan (John), and Nick Kovacevich, her stepgrandchildren Mike Watson, Lynn Brown (Arnold), Avery Moody, Ill (Kippy Tift), and Samuel Moody-Uscanga (Dafne), her great grandchildren Lauren Black and Reid Black, her step great grandson Ray Moody, her sister Janice Preston, and many nieces and nephews.
