Muriel Barbara "Bobbi" Yvonne Grant Campfield

September 23, 1923 — August 1, 2025

Macon

Muriel Barbara "Bobbi" Yvonne Grant Campfield passed away peacefully Friday, August 1, 2025 at the age of 101, just a month and a half away from being 102. She was born September 23, 1923 in Hastings/St. Leonards-On-Sea, Sussex, England. She was the daughter of the late Major Alexander John Stevenson Grant and Muriel Louise Wormwell Grant, also of Hastings.

Bobbi attended the Hastings and St. Leonards Ladies College and the Hastings College of Art before volunteering to join the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Services) of the British Army during World War II. She took the driving course and became a staff car driver. Interestingly, the then Princess Elizabeth also joined the ATS and took the same driving course. Bobbi would say that the princess was just like the rest of them except the princess would go to the castle at night, and they would go to the barracks. After the war, the princess / Queen Elizabeth II followed Bobbi all the way down the line by first marrying the same year, 1947. Bobbi had a son, Patrick, the following year, and the princess had Charles. Two years later, Bobbi had a daughter, Phillipa, and the princess had Anne. 10 and 12 years went by, and Bobbi had two more sons, PJ and Beau, and the now queen also had her youngest sons, Andrew and Edward. Quite a coincidence. Bobbi always loved telling this story.

In 1952, Bobbi emigrated from England to move to Canada with two children, Patrick and Phillipa due to her ex-husband’s promotion with Hert’s Pharmaceuticals/ Smith and Nephew. In 1958, Bobbi married Peter Graham Campfield. His profession with Imperial Oil/Esso/Exxon moved them from Western Canada to Eastern Canada and then back to Western Canada before being transferred in 1966 to the NY office of Standard Oil of New Jersey. The family, now including PJ and Beau, moved to Greenwich, CT. In 1971, Peter was transferred to Exxon Chemical in Brussels, Belgium. PJ and Beau attended the International School of Brussels, while Patrick and Phillipa were in college back in the States. Bobbi loved this move since she was able to take several trips back and forth to England. They moved back to Greenwich in 1977. Bobbi and Peter lived in at least 20 different homes, even living in two houses twice. Bobbi was quite the decorator!

Growing up on the British sea coast, Bobbi was an excellent swimmer and diver. She loved playing tennis and staying active. She was even a member of the curling team when living in Canada. Bobbi was a member of the DBE (Daughters of the British Empire) Marina Chapter in Greenwich, CT. She was a member of the Norman Garbo Art group since 1980. Her homes always displayed her beautiful artwork. She volunteered as a Red Cross Driver in Greenwich, CT. Bobbi was also an excellent gourmet cook, learning and making many of her recipes from French and Chinese cooking classes while living in Belgium. Bobbi was a past member of the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich and First Church Congregational in Fairfield, CT.

Bobbi and Peter were avid sailors and were members of the Old Greenwich Yacht Club. They competed in many sailing races in Long Island Sound and loved bare boat chartering with CSY Sailing Yachts in the British Virgin Islands. Her younger sons often sailed with them and became excellent sailors themselves.

Bobbi was predeceased by her loving husband, Peter Graham Campfield. She is survived by her children Patrick Conolly (Barbara Piontek), Phillipa Elliott (Bill), Peter John Campfield (Julie), and Beau Campfield (Laura), nine grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank Bobbi’s devoted caregivers, Tangela, Teresa, and Shirley for loving and taking such good care of her. I would also like to thank the wonderful hospice team, especially Jessica and Ethel for making sure she was comfortable and cared for.

A memorial service will be held in Connecticut at a later date.
