Mortimer Franklin Meadors of Carlyle Place, Macon, Georgia, age 98, died peacefully surrounded by family on November 24, 2021, at Atrium Health Hospice Pine Pointe, in Macon, Georgia. Born on December 28, 1922, in Oxford, Georgia, he grew up in Covington, Georgia, and had lived in Macon since 1947. His parents were Henry Frank Meadors and Gladys Ila Kitchens Meadors of Covington. He attended North Georgia College, and later, after serving in the U.S. Army, he graduated from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. During World War II, he served in the 95th Infantry Division of Patton’s 3rd Army in France. In December 1944, he was wounded in action and later awarded the Purple Heart for his service.
He practiced as a Certified Public Accountant in Macon for 40 years, having served as the president of the Macon Chapter of the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants and the Macon Estate Planning Council. He was a partner in the accounting firm of Walker, Meadors, Garrett & Laney, which later became Meadors, Wall & Company. He was a charter member of Riverside United Methodist Church serving many years on various committees including Finance Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was Special Gifts Chairman for the building of the sanctuary, instrumental in building the new addition, and gave the organ in memory of his parents and stepdaughter, Debra Beverly Hicks. He also set up the Organ Trust Fund for its maintenance. He was a long-time member and served as President of the Beaty-Gray Sunday School Class. He was presented with a special ‘pin’ by the Friendship Circle of Riverside for his many years of active service to the church. More recently, he became a member of Vineville Methodist Church where there are four generations of Meadors.
He is a former member of Macon Elks Club, Macon Moose Club, The Sertoma Club and Idle Hour Country Club. For many years he was active in scouting and serving as Cub Pack master. He was past President and Director of the Metropolitan Dinner Club. He was also a member of the Macon Shield Club and the Macon Touchdown Club. He served on the Board of Directors of American Federal Savings and Loan Association. He was the chairman of Volunteer Macon. As one of the founding members of The Macon Civic Club, he served for several years as its first treasurer; later he was a member of the Senior Macon Civic Club.
He served nine years on the Board of the Bibb County Department of Family and Children Services, and several years as Chairman of the Board. He was one of fourteen panel members selected to study the efficiency of Bibb County and the possible advantages of consolidating the city and county. He was a trustee of the Williamson Memorial Scholarship Fund, serving as its treasurer.
His main hobbies were fishing, hunting and UGA football. He was an avid reader, especially of history and biographies. With his wife, family, and friends, he traveled extensively throughout the United States and many countries of the world.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beverly Burgess Meadors. Other survivors include his three sons Mortimer F. Meadors, Jr. of Clayton, Georgia, Gary M. Meadors (Betty), of Macon, and Alan S. Meadors, of Macon; two step-children, Mary Tamsen Hicks Delong (Dennis), of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and Dr. Walter Lynn Hicks of St. Simons Island, Georgia; eight grandchildren, Amy Meadors Broderick (Andy) of St. Simons Island, Georgia, Frank Meadors, III (Kristen), of Rabun Gap, Georgia, Stuart Meadors, Jr., of Macon, Georgia, Claire Meadors Schorr (Will), of Greenville, South Carolina, Alex Meadors and Molly Meadors Deweese (Chad), of Macon, Georgia, Abby Meadors Smith (Matthew), of Atlanta, Georgia, and David Shoffitt, of Nashville, Tennessee; five great-grandchildren, Graham Olivieri, Thomas Meadors, George and Charlie Deweese, and Renner Schorr.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, one brother, stepdaughter, Debra Beverly Hicks, and a daughter-in-law, Angela Mankin Meadors.
Services will be held at Vineville United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at 11:00 am; the family will receive visitors immediately following the service in the church’s Christian Life Center. The burial at Riverside Cemetery will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon, Georgia, 31204, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
