Milton Burts Pope, Sr., born May 13, 1932, in Dublin, Georgia, passed away at his home in Macon, Georgia, on October 28, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gen. and Mrs. C. Flannery Pope, Sr., his brother, Lt. Col. Charles F. Pope, Jr., and his grandson Mitchell Pope. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-six years, Carol, sons Milton B. (Buddy) Pope, Jr. (Becky) of Macon and Nathan K. Pope (Sarah) of Ware’s Wharf, Virginia, and his grandchildren Daniel Pope of Macon and Flannery and Rebecca Pope of Ware’s Wharf, Virginia, and many very good friends.
Mickey graduated from Dublin High School, where he played on the football team for four years and was a member of the debate team that won the state championship in his senior year. At Georgia Tech, he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and served on the student council. After two years at Tech, he transferred to the University of Georgia. There, he served as president of Kappa Alpha Order and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
After three years serving as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, Mickey spent forty-five years in the textile industry in sales and sales management. Employed by Bibb Manufacturing, National Spinning, Glen Raven Mills, and Rocky Mount Mills, he served customers from New England and the Mid-Atlantic to the Midwest and the Southeast.
In Rocky Mount, NC, and in Macon, he taught Sunday School and served as president of the local Kiwanis clubs multiple times. He and his wife Carol have been active members in the First Methodist Church in Rocky Mount and in Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in Macon.
Mickey delivered for Meals on Wheels and was a reading volunteer at Bernd Elementary School for 20 years; prepared income taxes as an AARP volunteer; and chaired the Macon and North Central District Board of Missions for 10 years.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 6, at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends following the service in the parlor. Interment will be private at Northview Cemetery in Dublin. Rather than flowers, please consider a contribution to the Methodist Home for Children and Youth or to the Hamilton Holt Scholarship fund of the Kiwanis Club of Macon.
