MACON - Dr. Milledge Clark Newton, beloved husband and father, died on Monday, August 2, 2010 at home. He was the son of the late Dr. Ralph George Newton, Sr. and Irma Clark Newton. He practiced internal medicine for 35 years, part of a legacy of family physicians including his grandfather, father, brother, son and other family members. The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 pm on Tuesday at the residence. Following a private burial at Riverside Cemetery, a memorial service will be held Wednesday at 10 am at Hart's Mortuary at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Ingleside Baptist Church, 834 Wimbish Road, Macon, GA 31210; Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Georgia, 1160 Forsyth St., Macon, GA 31201; or Stratford Academy, 6010 Peake Road, Macon, GA 31220. Dr. Newton attended Lanier High School for Boys in Macon and Emory University in Atlanta. He received his M.D. from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC. He completed his internship at the Graduate Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he met his future wife Diane Arms (Dee). He completed his residency in internal medicine at the North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. He served in the United States Navy as a first lieutenant for two years, during which he was stationed in Taipei, Taiwan and Macon. In 1961, Dr. Newton entered private practice in Macon. He was on the medical staff at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, the Middle Georgia Hospital and Charter North Side Hospital. Dr. Newton also served as a founding trustee when Coliseum Park Hospital was built and was a doctor for the Southern Railway. He was a member of the Bibb County Medical Society, the Medical Association of Georgia, the American Society of Internal Medicine, and the American Medical Association. Dr. Newton was a charter member of Ingleside Baptist Church and a member of the Idle Hour Country Club. He was active in local charities. Dr. Newton is survived by his wife of 50 years, Diane Arms Newton; his son Dr. Milledge Clark Newton, Jr. and his wife Roxanne of Valdosta; two daughters, Jennifer Aline Newton of Chicago, IL and Deanne Elise Newton of Redondo Beach, CA; his sister-in-law, Harriet Adams Newton; and two nieces, Harriet Newton Sams and her husband Kenneth Dorsey Sams, and Clark Newton Young and her husband Dr. Edward Hotchkiss Young; and their families, all of Macon.
