"There is a place of quiet rest, near the heart of God…" and on November 10, 2016 Mayme Ellen Mayes, 95, peacefully took her resting place. Funeral services will be at 2:00PM on Sunday, November 13, 2016 in the chapel of Hart's Mortuary at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, with David Israel and Jim Worley officiating. Family will greet friends following the service. Burial will be at 11:00AM on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 in Lafayette Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ronald McDonald House, 1160 Forsyth Street, Macon, Georgia 31201, or The Children's Hospital Navicent Health, 777 Hemlock Street, Macon, Georgia 31201. Born August 15, 1921 to the late John and Zana Cain Splittorff, she was the youngest of 5 children. She was of the Baptist faith. She was born in Warrick County, Boonville, Indiana. She grew up in Center Inn, near Boonville. It was here she became friends with the Middleton family which she would eventually become a part of when she married Tommy. They had three children, Jim, Linda, and Lanna. Tommy was killed December 18, 1944 in the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his death, she became a Gold Star Wife. Mayme met her husband, Frank, whom she married in the 1940s, and they had a son, Jerry. Frank preceded Mayme in death in 1976. Being an Army wife, she lived in Texas, Germany, and other states in the USA. She was a member of the NCO Wive's Club for many years, supporting other women who made the commitment to honor their military husbands and families. Mayme was a dedicated wife, loving mother, and a wonderful homemaker. In addition to her parents, and husband, Frank Mayes, Mayme was also predeceased by her first husband, "Tommy" James Middleton, beloved grandson, Chad Stuart, and a friend, Darrell Cook. She leaves behind her loving children, "Jim" James Middleton (Sandra) of Roswell, Georgia, Linda Stuart (Glynn) of Macon, Lanna Peoples (Ronnie) of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Jerald "Jerry" Mayes (Donna) of Deltona, Florida, and a very much loved sister-in-law, June Rudisill of Boonville, Indiana; grandchildren, Andra M. Brown of Atlanta, Tom Middleton of Milton, Georgia, Ron Peoples, Jr. of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Tim Peoples of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Todd Stuart of Atlanta, Chris Stuart of Macon, Aaron Mayes of Deltona, Florida, and Amy Hoover of Deltona, Florida; 18 great grandchildren; and beloved nieces and nephews.
