May Walker

d. January 29, 2012

May W. Walker of 200 Pierce Avenue, Villa 103 A died on January 29, 2012. Born in South Carolina on October 30 1907, she spent her early childhood in St. Clair, GA before moving to Augusta for the remainder of her years in elementary and secondary school. She graduated from Coker College in Hartsville, SC and earned a Master's Degree from Columbia University in New York. A job teaching physical education at Wesleyan College brought her to Macon in 1930. She said she always felt guilty receiving pay for a job that she enjoyed so much. She made lifelong friends among her fellow faculty members and her students. Her parents were Wade Hampton White and Carrie May Watson White. She had four brothers all of whom predeceased her. In Macon, she met and married Charles W. Walker who predeceased her, and together they had three children, Patricia Walker Bass (Thomas L.), Charles Wesley Walker, Jr. (Munnerlyn) both of Macon, and Nancy W. Walker of Charlotte NC. She left her Wesleyan job when her children were born and became the consummate volunteer, focusing on Girl Scouting. She was a troop leader for 25 years and served on the Girl Scout board of directors, becoming its President. She was chair of the camp committee for Camp Martha Johnston for a number of years and was the recipient of the Girl Scout Thanks Badge for her service. The Arts and Crafts center at the camp is named the Charles W. and May Walker center. In 2011 the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia presented her with the "Woman of Distinction" award. Other volunteer efforts included the Parent Teacher Association at Joseph Clisby School, now Vineville Academy, teaching Sunday School and serving in various other capacities and on the Administrative Board at Vineville United Methodist Church where she was a member. Mrs. Walker and her husband organized a chapter of the Experiment in International Living in Macon and hosted numerous groups and individuals from other countries. Having people from other countries as friends spurred an interest in international travel which they enjoyed for many years. Another interest was teaching English to the spouses of Japanese nationals who came to work in Macon. She also worked for one afternoon a week at the library at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center. A resident of Magnolia Manor for the last years of her life, she was active in organizing weekly vesper services for residents there. She had her own ministry at Magnolia Manor, visiting the sick, the lonely and the newcomers there. She is survived by seven adoring grandchildren, Tucker Bass, Langston Bass, Walker Bass, Miriam Walker, Wesley Walker III, Juliane Walker McCaleb and Macie Walker and nine great grandchildren. The family appreciates the love and attention lavished upon her by her care givers, Annie Hudson, Shirley Jones, Judith Thomas, Carolyn Finney, Liz Cornelius, Lillie Campbell and Mattie Richardson as well as the quiet support and care from Pine Pointe Hospice. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, February 1 at Vineville United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m., with Dr. Marcus Tripp and the Reverend Jimmy Duke officiating. Burial is private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, or Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue. Register online at www.hartsmort.com. Hart's Mortuary and Crematory at the Cupola has charge of arrangements.
