Maxine Word, 89, of Crawford County, Georgia, passed away Saturday, July 6, 2024. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery.
Daughter of the late, James Charlie “J.C.” Nicholson and Lillian Lee Selph Nicholson, Maxine was born in Empire, Georgia, on March 6, 1935. Maxine dedicated her life to the medical field, retiring after many years of service at the Macon Hospital and various private practices.
Maxine was a devout member of the Thomaston Road Church of Christ. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life and inspired many of her endeavors and relationships. Her warmth, kindness, and selfless service to others will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Maxine is survived by her children, Barbara W. Herring (Jerry) of Morven, Georgia, Steven J. Word of Crawford County, and Mary Hopper of Crawford County; grandchildren: Danny Brownlee, Tyler Brownlee, Arrilea Herring, Steven Word Jr. (Erika), and Chris Hopper (Savannah); great grandchildren, Makalyn Meyer, Cambrie Meyer, John Luke Hopper, and Brantley Cash Hopper; great great grandchild, Blair Rose Leverett; sister, Linda Faye Cessna of Fort Valley, Georgia; brother, Donald Nicholson (Patricia) of Macon, Georgia; and sister-in-law, Evie “Dink” Nicholson of Byron, Georgia.
In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Winston Word, Jr.; son, Barry Lamar Thompson; siblings, Corliss Nicholson, Andrew Nicholson, and Betty Juhan; and her son-in-law, Dennis Hopper.
