Mary Katherine Walters

July 5, 1916 — October 30, 2013

Mary Katherine Walters of Macon, Georgia died Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at the age of 97. Katherine was born at the Macon Hospital on July 5, 1916 to Katherine Rawley and Thomas Luther Walters. She had one sister, Sarah Macon Walters Sherwood, and one brother, James Rawley Walters. Katherine grew up in Macon's Cherokee Heights Neighborhood, and she attended Alexander I and Winship Elementary Schools, Lanier Junior High School, and graduated from A.L. Miller High School. Her favorite subject was math, and she loved to swim and play tennis. One of her fondest childhood memories was going to Nu Way every Christmas Eve with her father to eat hot dogs. Katherine attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville (now Georgia College and State University), completing her degree in three years. Following graduation, she attended GAB School of Commerce in Macon where she took a complete business course. In 1942 Katherine began work at Central of Georgia Railroad, which is now Norfolk Southern Railroad. She was proud of her 34-year career at the Railroad, working in "a man's world". Katherine loved to travel, especially by train to New York City to attend Broadway plays. She saw many plays with the original cast members, including Julie Andrews in "My Fair Lady". Having a high value for education, Katherine created a scholarship fund at the Community Foundation of Central Georgia in memory of her family. She enjoyed helping women pursue higher education through this fund. She also left a lasting legacy for her family through the establishment of the Walters Family Fund at the Community Foundation. This fund will exist in perpetuity to meet local needs through grants made by the Foundation's community grants program. Katherine is survived by her many friends, including those at The Community Foundation and at The Cottages on Wesleyan where she lived at the time of her death. She was a longtime member of Vineville United Methodist Church where she had served faithfully as a volunteer in the church office. Burial at Rose Hill Cemetery in the Walters Family Plot will be private.
