Mary Evelyn Salter, born Mary Evelyn Cumbus in Orlando Florida on February 14th, 1928. The only child to Mary Eleanor Doles and Orion Cleveland Cumbus passed away peacefully in the presence of family on March 27th, 2017 in Fleming Island, Florida. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 12:00PM at Hart's Mortuary at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon, GA 31210. The Reverend Dr. Bryan Whitfield will be officiating with the burial following the service at Riverside Cemetery. She is predeceased in death by her parents Mary Doles Cumbus and Orian Cleveland Cumbus, and her late husband Leon Hollie Salter, Sr. She moved from her birthplace of Orlando Florida to Macon Georgia at the young age of four and remained there until September of 2015 when she returned to Florida to be with her daughter and family. Evelyn attended Whittle Elementary School as a young child and went on to graduate from Macon's Miller High School. Following her graduation she gained employment with Davison's (Macys) Department Store and held the position of secretary to the manager. Her personal beauty and love for fashion encouraged her in her role as a model for Macys as well. Evelyn had a passion for flying and in fulfillment of her enthusiasm she acquired her pilot's license in her early twenties. She married in 1952 and began her family in 1953. She was an amazing devoted wife to her husband, and wonderful loving mother to her three children. She was a longtime member of the Glen Haven Garden Club, as well as various other Clubs in her community; she served as a fundraiser for the Cancer Society for many years. She had an incredible love for animals; and herself having numerous, she supported them throughout many charitable organizations. She began employment with the Regional Youth Development Center in Macon in 1970, and while employed attended Macon College where she studied Psychology and Sociology. Following 30 years of faithful service and genuine love for her co-workers and the position that she held there, she retired on the 31st of October, 2000. Evelyn was a longtime faithful member of St Andrews Presbyterian Church of where she served as elder, choir member, teacher for the young, served on numerous committees and was and friend to everyone. She is survived by a daughter Lee Anne Salter (Tim) Turbeville, two sons, Steven (Kathy Daly) Salter, Hollie (Terri Peed) Salter, eight grandchildren, Jennifer Collins, Barry Collins, Laura Jeffers, Jonathan Salter, Courtney Dews, Taylor Tribble, Colby Salter and Hallie Bree Salter, nine great-grandchildren, a cousin of whom she cherished as a "sister" with all of her heart, Carole Doles Hardy, a life long "treasured friend", Annette Smith, several nieces and nephews, and many friends whom she loved and considered her family. The gift of life that was given to her as she knew it here on this earth, she now exchanges it to be with the Lord, her loved ones and friends who await her in eternal peace, love, and happiness. We love you Mother, Grandmother and Friend. The goodness in your heart was overwhelming; you are the definition of love and grace. You will remain in our hearts forever, and we will miss you deeply.
