Macon-Mary Winship Coates, 92, died Sunday, May 9, 2010. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 11:00AM at St. Francis Church with Mary's niece, the Reverend Harriette Simmons and the Reverend Chad Vaughn officiating. Burial will be in Liberty Methodist Church Cemetery after a reception at the church. The family will greet friends between 6:00-8:00PM on Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at the home of Jim and Harriette Simmons, 4849 Brittany Drive. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Francis Church, 432 Forest Hill Road, Macon GA 31210 or Rainbow Center, 2020 Ingleside Avenue, Macon GA 31204. Mrs. Coates was born July 3, 1917 in Macon, Georgia. She was the first child of Florence Wood Winship and Dr. Herring Winship. Mrs. Coates graduated from Miller High School in 1934 and also graduated from Mills Kindergarten School in New York City. She graduated from Stanford University in 1939. Mrs. Coates married Richard Julian Coates, Jr. on July 22, 1939. She lived in Macon, GA, Sparta, NJ and Leesburg, VA. She served on the Board of the Red Cross and the Board of Speech and Hearing in Leesburg, VA. She served on the Board of Education and the Library Board in Sparta, NJ, and also the Board of PFLAG in Macon, GA. Mrs. Coates was active in St. Francis Church in Macon where she served on the Vestry and was a member of Daughters of the King. She was predeceased by both her husband and her son, Richard Julian Coates, III, and also her brother, Herring Winship, Jr. Survivors include her daughters, Dr. Susan Winship Coates of New York, NY and Dixie Coates Beckham of New York, NY; grandson, Andrew Coates Beckham of St. Augustine, FL; sister, Beth Winship Flanz of Yonkers, NY; nine nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends.
