Marvin C. Sonny Pittman

Marvin C. "Sonny" Pittman, 89, died Monday, November 17, 2008. Funeral Services will be private, with the family receiving friends at Hart's Mortuary on Cherry Street on Thursday, November 20, 2008, from 11:00AM to 12:00 noon. The family may be contacted following the visitation at 4690 Oxford Road, the residence of Kelli and Hunter Squires. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vineville United Methodist Church, 2045 Vineville Avenue, Macon, GA 31204; or Heartland Hospice, 115 Arkwright Landing, Macon, GA 31210. Mr. Pittman, 89, was the husband of and is survived by Hazel Hanson Pittman. His other survivors include three daughters, Carol P. Squires of Macon, Gena P. Rothermel (Charles) of Atlanta, and Betsy P. Clark (Ansel) of Valdosta. He is also survived by one granddaughter, Kelly Squires Haynes (Mike) of Macon; 4 grandsons; Hunter Squires (Kelli) of Macon, Parrish Clark (Eleanor) of Valdosta, Vinny Clark of Valdosta, and Chad Rothermel of Atlanta; and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Kathleen Crawford Pittman; one son, Thomas A. Pittman, MD, of Columbia, Maryland and a sister, Harriet Pittman Wilkins of Atlanta. He was born in Macon, February 27, 1919, the son of Marvin C. Pittman and Hulda Skellie Pittman. He attended Bibb County Public Schools and graduated from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of SAE fraternity and a guard on the football squad from 1939 to 1942. Pittman served ten years in the Army and Air Force Reserves including six years on active duty during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Two of these years were with the Corps of Engineers and four years were as pilot with the Air Force, attaining the rank of Major. For fifty years he was owner of Pittman-Waller Roofing Company, from which he retired in 1997. Pittman was a life long member of Vineville United Methodist Church. He taught Sunday School for thirty years and was in the Adult Webb Fellowship Class. He also served as member and chairman of the Administrative Board and as a member of the Board of Trustees. He was a longtime member of the Idle Hour Country Club, a charter member of the Macon Touchdown Club, and a member of the Macon Exchange Club. A heart felt thanks goes out to the many caregivers who took care of Mr. Pittman during his long illness. Hart's Mortuary and Crematory, Cherry Street, has charge of arrangements.
