Marvin Jerome ("Buddy") Becker, 91, of Macon, Georgia, died Tuesday, March 17 after a brief illness. Mr. Becker was born in Macon on May 24, 1923 to Ida Lavine Becker and Simon Lewis Becker. He graduated from Lanier High School and attended the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy where he later taught physics. As a Commander in the U.S. Navy, he served for many years in the Naval Reserve. He was married to Carrie Popper Becker, also of Macon, until her death in 2003. As a second-generation owner of Union Furniture Company in downtown Macon, he worked full-time until just weeks before his illness. He also operated his family's peach farm in Byron in the 1950s and 1960s. An avid golfer and traveler, he organized multiple domestic and international trips with his wife and family. A deeply civic-minded and respected member of the community, he served twice as president of Temple Beth Israel, was a past president of the VineIngle Lions Club, and a member of Idle Hour Country Club. He was devoted to his wife, children, and grandchildren. He was kindhearted, dedicated, and a person of deep loyalty and multiple good deeds. Mr. Becker is survived by his children, Marjorie Ruth Becker of Santa Monica, California; Joan Elizabeth Becker, Mr. and Mrs. Simon Lewis Becker, all of Macon, Georgia; his grandchildren Michael Morris Becker of Decatur, Georgia, and Allison Carroll Becker of Atlanta, Georgia; his brother David H. Becker, of Macon, Georgia, and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held in the William Wolff Cemetery at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, 2015. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Temple Beth Israel , 892 Cherry Street, Macon, GA 31201. BEAT ARMY!!!
