MACON -- Mrs. Marsha Grace Dorough Morton, 86, died peacefully on November 21, 2023, after a brief illness. She was a native of Crisp County and a longtime resident of Macon, Georgia. A daughter of the late John Dorough Sr. and Sammye Farrow Dorough, Marsha was a beloved mother and grandmother who devoted her life to caring for her family, neighbors and friends. For her, generosity was a way of life. From Marsha’s famous caramel cake to her cornbread, she was a talented baker who was always eager to share with others. Marsha always opened her home and her heart to others. As her two sons grew, their backyard on Matthews Place, dubbed “Three Creeks Stadium,” became a gathering spot for neighborhood children who Marsha welcomed and simply called “my boys.” A person of deep faith, Marsha was a member of Wesleyan Drive Baptist Church where she served as a greeter, choir member and officer of the Good News Sunday School class. She demonstrated her devotion to God not just in her words, but in the way she cared for others.
Marsha was a 1955 graduate of East Crisp High School and an active member of the East Crisp Alumni Association. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Herman Morton, Jr. and her brother, John Dorough, Jr.
Survivors include two sons, Daryl James Morton (Amy) and Daniel Thomas Morton (Ginger), both of Macon, a sister, June Hamilton of Cordele, Georgia and four grandchildren and one great grandchild: Ashleigh Morton, Alex Morton, Tyler Newton (Mamie) and Matthew Newton (Lindsey) and their daughter, Julia Grace.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, November 26 at 2 p.m. at Wesleyan Drive Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Gibbs officiating. Interment will follow in the Highview Cemetery in Gray, Georgia. Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 25 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hart’s Mortuary at the Cupola on Peake Road.
