Marion Harper "Brother" Liles, Jr.

Marion Harper “Brother” Liles, Jr., 87, of Macon, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 11, 2022, at 11:30a.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with the Reverend Bryan Hinson officiating. Interment will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery.  The family will greet friends on Thursday, February 10, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00p.m. at Hart’s Mortuary at the Cupola.

Mr. Liles was born in Macon, Georgia, and attended Alexander IV Elementary School, Lanier High School, and graduated from The Darlington School, Rome, Georgia. He attended Emory University and then Mercer University, where he graduated with a BA degree. He joined the United States Army where he was stationed in Berlin, Germany for two years. He served seven years in the National Guard. He began his banking career in Atlanta with Trust Company of Georgia. He moved back home to Macon in the early 1960s.

He met and married the love of his life, Catharine Burns, in 1963. They had 3 daughters, Mary Parker, Rebecca, and Catharine. He was the consummate gentleman, husband, and father.

“Brother” lived a wonderful and abundant life as a loan officer and trust officer with Trust Company, First National and SunTrust for 36 years, retiring in 1993. He graduated from banking schools at Northwestern and Tulane.

Mr. Liles was a member of Macon Rotary Club for 51 years and strove to always put service above self. He was a very active member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church where he served several different terms on the Vestry and served as church treasurer for many years. He was active in the Macon Area Chamber of Commerce, the Community Foundation, the Macon Arts Alliance, Mercer University Alumni Association as well as the Wesleyan College Board of Visitors. He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, Georgia chapter.

Brother hiked the Appalachian Trail over many years with friends. He loved dancing with his bride, golfing, and lunching with several groups of buddies.

Mr. Liles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Catharine Burns Liles; daughters, Mary Parker Liles (Mark Yates), of Washington, North Carolina, Rebecca Grist (Joel), of Macon, Georgia, Catharine Watkins (Nat), of Macon, Georgia, and; grandchildren: Hali McClain Johnson, Jeremiah Johnson, Mary Blain Grist, Jack Grist, and Mary Cate Sample; sister-in-law, Hazel Struby (Neil), of Gray, Georgia; and brother-in-law, Derry Burns (Juliette), of Macon, Georgia.

Mr. Liles was preceded in death by his parents, Marion Harper Liles, Sr. and Mary Frierson Liles; and his sister, June Merriman Liles.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church at 753 College Street, Macon, GA 31201, or the Community Foundation of Central Georgia.
