Margaret Atchley Phillips passed away on Saturday, December 28, 2013. Margaret was the fourth of six children, born to Bruce and Mabel Atchley of Sevier and Loudon counties in East Tennessee. She earned degrees from Berea College in Kentucky and the University of Alabama. Working as an assistant chemist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, she proudly served her country during World War II. Margaret taught high school on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and later joined the faculty of Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. Her many activities included serving as executive secretary for Macon Little Theater. She was preceded in death by five siblings and her husband of 48 years, George L. Phillips, Sr. as well as her son, John Gregory Phillips and grandson, Wesley Alan Phillips. Survivors include sons, George Phillips (Marilyn), Roger Phillips, and Mark Phillips (Rosalyn); daughter, Bronwyn Phillips Young (Troy); grandsons, Jay Daly, Phil Daly (Stacy), John Phillips (Caroline), Ashley Phillips; granddaughter, Melissa Davis (Roscoe); great-grandchildren, Savannah Daly, Zoe Davis, Holt Davis, and Ava Jean Phillips. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, December 30, 2013, 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Hart's at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia. Private services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pine Pointe Hospice, 6261 Peake Road, Macon, Georgia; or the Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, Florida, 32256.
