Margaret Schwertfeger Horst

April 7, 1917 — December 16, 2014

Margaret was born on April 7, 1917 to Cora and Harry W. Schwertfeger in Minneapolis MN; the family later moved to Muscatine, Iowa where she grew up and graduated from Muscatine High School. She was active in the church choir and often sang at weddings. Marg attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City, majoring in English; she pledged and was an active member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and was proud of all things Iowan. She met her future husband, Norman, during high school and after he graduated from Iowa, they married. During WWII, they were stationed in Pontiac, MI where Norman, an engineer, was based at a US Navy rocket assembly plant. Their only child, Michael, was born in Pontiac. After the war, the family moved several times before settling in Moline, Illinois, where Norman worked for American Air Filter and Marg was a substitute teacher and homemaker. She later served as the director of the local YWCA. She sang in the choir at First Congregational Church in Moline; her favorite performance was the candlelight service on Christmas Eve. She was active in duplicate bridge groups. During retirement, Marg and Norm spent summers in Cohasset, Minnesota and enjoyed fishing and antiquing. Marg and Norm moved to Macon, Georgia in 2000 to be closer to their son Michael and his family. Shortly after, Norm was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away. Later, Marg decided to follow a friend and moved to Carlyle Place where she lived in independent living with her Yorkie, Isha, until December 2010. After surgery for a perforated duodenal ulcer at the Medical Center of Central Georgia, she was moved to Cambridge Court at Carlyle and after a partial recovery, to Stafford Suites. In recent years, Marg enjoyed reading and trips to go to the Carlyle Place library. She leaves behind many good friends at Carlyle Place and the family expresses their thanks for the warm welcome and greetings that the residents and staff there provided over the years. We are especially grateful for the care and love provided by her family physician, Dr. Roberta Weintraut of Macon. The family plans a ceremony later in the spring in Illinois, where Marg will be buried next to Norman at the Rock Island Arsenal National Cemetery. Register online at www.hartsmot.com. Hart's Mortuary and Crematory, Cherry Street, has charge of arrangements.
