Macon- Marjorie Reid McFerrin died peacefully in her sleep Monday, May 10, 2011 in a local hospital. Born Marjorie Lois Reid May 18, 1918 to her parents Howard Merten and Lois Moore Reid. She was preceeded in death by her husband, James Madison McFerrin in 1983. Mrs. McFerrin was born in Macon and attended the local schools here graduating from high school at A.L. Miller High School. She went on to receive her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology at Mercer University. She was the President of Phi Mu Sorority while at Mercer and voted to be a Phi Delta Theta's Sweetheart. After finishing school during the 1950's and early sixties, she opened "Jories", the first childrens' specialty store located on Ingleside Avenue, the first specialty store opened in a shopping center in Macon. She sold infant and little girl's clothes unlike any others sold in Macon. Mothers shopped at Jorie's for the beautiful and unusual. Later, Mrs. McFerrin designed exquisite handmade sweaters that she contracted with a young Hong Kong lady, who then shipped them to Saks Fifth Avenue in New york and other major resort areas exclusively for Saks. She and her family made one or two more trips abroad to design and improvise more beautiful sweaters. She was a member of the Vineville United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughters Marjorie Reid Jennings of Macon, and Suzanne Jennings of St. Simons Island; and four stepchildren: Fontaine McFerrin Souther of Dalton, Craige McFerrin of Pensacola , William Holt McFerrin, and James Madison McFerrin, III of Atlanta and her longtime devoted friend Helen D. Hughes. Memorial Services will be held in the chapel of Vineville United Methodist Church at 3:30 next Thursday, May 19, 2011 with Chaplain Joseph S. Dukes III of Albany GA. officiating. Hart's Mortuary and Crematory, Cherry Street, has charge of arrangements.
