LYNWOOD J. COX WWII COMBAT SOLDIER Mr. Lynwood Cox, age 86, passed away April 7, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 18, 1926 in Wadley, Georgia as the youngest son of the late Malcom and Addie Belle Cox. Lynwood is survived by his wife Barbara, Dry Branch, Georgia; sons Anthony (Linda), Macon, Georgia, Bruce (Dianne), Macon, Georgia, Joe (Kimberly), Buford, Georgia, and Mark, Dry Branch, Georgia; and daughter Judy (Layne) Hendrickson, Benton, Kentucky; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. During WWll, Lynwood served with the 45th Infantry Division, 180th Regiment as a machine gunner. During the war, the 45th Division was known for many meritorious campaigns to include Anzio, Italy, the counter invasion after D-Day into Southern France and Germany and the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp near Munich. His commendations include the Purple Heart, a military decoration awarded to those who were wounded in combat. Lynwood is remembered with fondness as "L J" in the Macon area and as the former owner of the Union 76 service station on Napier Avenue. He enjoyed fishing trips to Florida and then cooking the bountiful catch with a fish fry. Lynwood leaves a legacy of devotion to his family, always upbeat and full of life. A memorial service will be at 11:00 AM Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at the chapel of Hart's Mortuary at the Cupola, 6324 Peake Road, Macon, with the Reverend A. B. McMillian officiating. Interment will be at 2:30 PM Wednesday at Coleman's Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery, Wadley, Georgia. The family will greet friends on Tuesday from 5 until 7 PM at the Cupola.
