Lynwood was preceded in death by his fifth grandchild, William Dalton Collins. Lynwood grew up in Macon, Georgia and attended Lanier High School in Macon, Georgia. In 1945, Lynwood joined the United States Navy and served in World War II. After the war, Lynwood worked for a pulp mill in Rome, Georgia where he met and married Shirley Mildred Popham of Taylorsville, Georgia. Lynwood and Shirley moved to Brewton, Alabama, where Lynwood continued to work in the pulp mill industry. In Brewton, Shirley gave birth to their two sons. In 1962, the family moved to Epworth by the Sea on Saint Simons Island, Georgia, where Lynwood worked for the Brunswick Pulp and Paper Mill. They were members of the First Baptist Church of Saint Simons Island. They frequently went to the beach and enjoyed boating and fishing in the coastal waters. Lynwood and Shirley enjoyed raising their family on the island, and he spoke fondly of Saint Simons Island until his final days. Around 1981, Lynwood opened The Rib Cage BBQ Restaurant at the Village on Saint Simons Island, which was best known for his fabulous Brunswick stew, skin-on french fries, and local conversation. Lynwood was known as Papa to his grandchildren, whom he loved and adored. Papa spent many weekends with them at the family farm in Gray, Georgia, where they would explore the farm, build fires, ride motorcycles, and play in the woods. Many of these trips included visits to Nu-Way Wieners and old Clinton Barbeque. Lynwood is survived by his two sisters, Alice Strozier and Carolyn Kennedy Dominy; two sons, Lynwood "Woody" Gray Collins, III (Donna) and James Carlton Collins (Mary Lou); four grandchildren, Grayson Cody Collins, Spencer Garrett Collins, James Austin Collins, and Stephanie Brooke Collins; and one great-grandchild, Lizzie Louise Collins.
