Lt. Col. Julie Ann Baumgartner, Retired

Lieutenant Colonel Julie Ann Baumgartner, United States Air Force, Retired, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2020.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 1:00 PM at Hart’s at the Cupola Chapel.  Father James Patterson will officiate.  The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel.  Burial will be at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery.

Julie was born September 25, 1929, in Macon, Georgia to the late Charles F. Baumgartner and Beulah Burdge Baumgartner.  Julie graduated from Macon Hospital Nursing School.  She retired from the Air Force after serving twenty-two years as a Nurse.  She was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in Japan.  She received recognition for her participation as a member of the Department of Defense Medical Support Operations Team during the First 6 orbit flight of an American Astronaut around the earth on October 3, 1962 (John Glenn’s space flight); she received a Certificate of Scholarship from the University of Maryland Overseas Program and was placed upon the Academic Honor Roll, July 1967; for her participation in the 1974 USAFE Medical Service Training Conference in Berchtesgaden, Germany; and she received a certificate from Heart of Georgia Hospice for her service to America and for the advancement of the universal hope of freedom and liberty for all.

Julie was a member of All Saints Anglican Catholic Church and attended faithfully before her health declined.  Julie was involved in the musical community in the Middle Georgia Area where she taught violin to middle and high school students.  She enjoyed playing canasta but most of all she enjoyed spending time with her nephews, nieces and great-nieces and great-nephews.

In addition to her parents, Julie was predeceased by her sisters, Ida Farr, Ruth Sandefur, Anita Evans, and Grace Powers; her brother, John Baumgartner; nephews Fred Powers and Charles Sandefur; and niece, Mary Jean Hall. She is survived by two nephews Joe Evans of Warner Robins, Georgia, David Baumgartner of Garland, Texas; six nieces, Jackie Howard of Vienna, Georgia, Jean Walker of Raleigh, North Carolina, Donna Vanchiere of Lake Charles, Louisiana, Kay Baumgartner of White Mills, Pennsylvania, Lisa Baumgartner of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Anita Singletary of Goose Creek, South Carolina and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution in Julie’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, Central Georgia Region Office, 866 Mulberry Street, Macon, Georgia 31201.
