Macon- Lowell Mae Frederick Stevens died Saturday, January 22, 2011 in Macon, Georgia. Memorial Services will be held in Evergreen, Alabama on Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the Evergreen Baptist Church at 3 p.m. and on Sunday, January 30,2011 at the First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon, Georgia at 3 p.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the music ministry of the Evergreen Baptist Church, Evergreen, Alabama; the music ministry of the First Baptist Church of Christ, Macon, Georgia; The Westfield School, Perry, Georgia; or to the donor's preferred charity. Born May 19, 1920 in Bear Creek, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Monroe Frederick and the late Sarah Alice Mullins Frederick. She was predeceased in death by her brother, Paul Wilson Frederick, and her two sisters, Mary Sue Frederick Hulsey and Tommie Lee Frederick Wiginton. She grew up in Marion County, Alabama and graduated from high school as the Valedictorian of the Class of 1939 at Hackleburg High School, Hackleburg, Alabama. She entered the University of Alabama in 1939 to fulfill her life-long dream of becoming a teacher. She enjoyed a thirty-eight year career as a teacher, teaching for two years in Monroe County, Alabama and then for thirty-six years in Conecuh County schools and Sparta Academy. Hundreds of children called her their beloved first grade teacher. In 1964, she completed a B. S. degree in education from The University of Alabama. She married Ray Guice Stevens in 1944 and lived in Evergreen, Alabama for forty-nine years, moving to Macon, Georgia in 1995 following the death of her husband. She was a devoted member of the Evergreen Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang in the Chancel Choir for four decades. At the time of her death she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Christ in Macon, Georgia where she was a member of the Reflectors Sunday School Class. Mrs. Stevens was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, dedicated to the lives of her family, to the education of children, to the life and ministry of her churches. She was a master seamstress and gardener, lover of music, and art student throughout her life. A loyal University of Alabama alumnus, she celebrated seventy-two years of Crimson Tide football. Left to cherish her memory and to continue her legacy of Christian faith and service to others are her son, Frederick Mitchell Stevens and his wife, Ann Murphy Stevens; her daughter, Rachel Ann Stevens Deems and her husband Kenneth Gary Deems; her granddaughters, Martha Leigh Stevens Crow and her husband Jason Randall Crow; Michelle Ann Stevens Coleman and her husband Alvin Atwell Coleman, III; Nancy Jane Stevens and Morgan Guice Deems; her great-grandchildren Alvin Atwell "Wells" Coleman, IV, Lowell Hundley Coleman, and Mitchell Stevens Coleman.
