Macon-Louis W. Dougherty, Jr., 91, passed on June 15, 2011. Visitation will be between 5 and 6 in the rotunda of Hart's at the Cupola on Friday, June 17, 2011. Funeral services will be private at Riverside Cemetery. Friends will gather at the Players' Club on Forsyth Road following visitation. At an early age, he was responsible for supporting his Mother, which helped mold his longtime ethic of giving to others. While working as a teenager, he managed to consistently make honor roll in high school, played basketball on the high school team, as well as presiding over several school scholastic organizations. He was always ‘the life of the party' from a young age to his senior years. Mr. Dougherty was a graduate of the University of Baltimore, having received a full 4 year basketball scholarship. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving our country during World War II. He was the office manager of Mathis Akins Concrete Company. He was a member of the Macon Lion's Club and a lifelong member and elder of Vineville Presbyterian Church. Mr. Dougherty sang in the Heart of Georgia Barbershop Chorus. He was the husband of the late Virginia Vernon Saunders Dougherty. He was also predeceased by his son, Michael Vernon Dougherty. Mr. Dougherty, friends called him Lou, was a man that put family first, believed in his Lord, always put others before himself, and never lost his wonderful sense of humor. His passions were music, singing, the ocean, and his 63 year love affair with ‘GiGi', his bride. His love continues today illustrated by his request of words on his grave marker, ‘Gone to be with GiGi'. And if you were a friend or acquaintance of Mr. Dougherty, you really knew him as ‘Daddy Lou'. Mr. Dougherty stated numerous times that in his last year he was so appreciative of the staff at Harrington House, Carlyle Place for taking such incredible care of him. Survivors include his daughter, Susan Dougherty Kern of Milledgeville; son, Scott Dougherty of Oglethorpe; grandchildren, Rebecca Raine Webb (William) of Americus, Brad Agers (Brooke) of Pensacola, Florida, and Bruce Agers (Flavia) of Brazil; five great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Register online at www.hartsmort.com. Hart's Mortuary and Crematory at the Cupola has charge of arrangements.
