Linda Gayle Clance

Linda Gayle Clance was not one to sit on the sidelines. Born on September 3, 1944, in Morristown, Tennessee, she spent her life doing what needed to be done, saying what needed to be said, and helping others without expecting anything in return. 

Linda believed that actions mattered more than words. Throughout her life, she showed up for family, friends, neighbors, and complete strangers alike. If someone needed help, Linda was there. If there was a problem to solve, she tackled it head-on. She never sought recognition, applause, or accolades for her efforts. For Linda, helping others was simply what you did. 

Strong-willed, fiercely independent, and unapologetically herself, Linda had a commanding presence that could fill a room. She was direct, honest, and never afraid to speak her mind. Those who knew her best understood that behind that tough exterior was a woman whose loyalty ran deep and whose love for her family was unwavering. 

Linda built a successful career in accounting, retiring in 2016 as Chief Financial Officer of Chris R. Sheridan Construction. She took pride in her work and earned the respect of colleagues through her sharp mind, work ethic, and ability to get things done. 

Away from work, Linda loved competition and camaraderie on the tennis court and later found the same joy on the pickleball court. She treasured the friendships she built through the games she loved and remained active and engaged throughout her life. 

More than anything, Linda valued family. She is survived by her daughters, Kathy Freeman and her husband, Richie, of Warner Robins, Georgia, and Jennifer Carter and her husband, Jim, of Valdosta, Georgia. She also leaves behind the grandchildren and great-grandchildren who brought her tremendous pride and joy: Madison Carlo and her husband, Seth, and their children, James Beckett, Joe, and Jack; Abigail Harrell and her husband, Matt, and their daughter, Molly; and Clancey Grace Carter, all of Valdosta, Georgia; siblings, Lee Hudgens, Gary Hudgens, Sherry Helton, and Betty Tipton. Linda's family was her greatest accomplishment, and she loved watching the generations that followed her grow and thrive. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Clance; parents, Frank and Dorothy Hudgens; and siblings, James Hudgens and Frank Hudgens. 

In accordance with her wishes, Linda will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2026, in the Chapel of Hart’s at the Cupola, with the Reverend Mike Davis officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. 

Those who knew Linda know she would not have wanted a long list of accomplishments or flowery praise. She would want to be remembered as someone who got the job done, stood up for the people she loved, and never hesitated to help when help was needed. 

Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the friends she made, and the countless lives she influenced through quiet acts of service that often went unnoticed—but never unappreciated.
