Leona Muriel Dockery O’Hara was born on January 25, 1918 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. She graduated from McLean Hospital Nursing School in 1939. Leona joined the United States Army in 1941. She served in Georgia, Alabama, Puerto Rico, Panama Canal and Hawaii. Leona received the American Theatre Service Medical and the American Defense Medal.
Leona was married to William A. O’Hara for 52 years and raised six children. In 1969, she went to work at Elmore for ten years. Leona worked for DFCAS from 1980 to 1993, where she was honored for her service as oldest worker.
She was on the Catholic Women’s Council and served as president for many years at St. Elizabeth Anne Seton Catholic Church. Leona led many community services such as the annual Christmas party for over one hundred elderly and coordinated garage sales to benefit the poor. She was the Georgia Catholic Woman of the Year while in her eighties. She was instrumental in founding the Cairo Help Agency and volunteered from 1994 until 2012. She devoted her life in making sure no one went to bed hungry. Leona was known for her faith, action, kindness and concern for others. She was willing to help others who would not be able repay her kindness.
We were blessed to call her mom, grandma and great grandma. Her children are Maureen (Dennis) Buyer of Jacksonville FL, Barbara (Wilson) Edwards of Cleveland TN, Christine O’Hara of Glendale AZ, William (Pam) O’Hara of Newnan GA, Kathy Goolsby of Macon GA, Michael (Pam) O’Hara of Woodbury TN and 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
