Lena Greenebaum Schram passed away at her home on August 17th. She was born at home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 29, 1909, the daughter of Camille Mendel and Albert Greenebaum,Sr. She was educated at Oak Lane Country Day School, and was a volunteer teacher in a settlement school after receiving her teaching degree. Lena married William Schoenbrun Schram in 1935, and moved to Chicago where she was active as a community volunteer with Chicago Women's Aid, the Community Chest, the League of Women Voters, and the National Council of Jewish Women, where she served as president and was a life member. In 1973 she moved to Macon and continued her involvement in the community. She was a volunteer at Christ Church Meals on Wheels, and was actively involved with the Council on World Affairs, the Institute of Religion, and the League of Women Voters. Lena loved the Macon Concert Association and the Macon Symphony, and attended as many concerts as possible. Until the end, she looked forward to the Metropolitan Opera every Saturday. She loved the arts and was a long time supporter. She was proud to have received a Cultural Award from Macon Arts. She is survived by her daughter, Louise S. Kaplan(Jerome) of Macon, and her son Albert Schram (Peggy)of Boston; grandchildren, Lise Kaplan(Eddie Wimberly), Billy Kaplan(Heather), Andrew Schram, and Jeffrey Schram, and her great-grandchildren who brought her special joy, Eliza Freedman and Frank Kaplan. Special thanks go to her care givers who were also wonderful friends: Betty Gilmore, Dianne Marks, Glenda McCray, Jeanette Foster, Lucille Eleby, and Verna Adams. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Macon Concert Association, P.O. Box 5694, Macon, Georgia 31208 or Museum of Arts and Sciences. A memorial service will be held at Temple Beth Israel on Friday, August 21, 2009 at 4:00pm.
