Laurence "Larry" William Fennelly

Laurence “Larry” William Fennelly, 83, of Macon, Georgia, passed away on September 2, 2026.

Larry lived a life marked by service, family, compassion, and an enduring commitment to helping others. A proud Army veteran, he carried that spirit of service throughout his life. He was a retired English professor from Middle Georgia State University, Mercer University, Wesleyan College, and Florida State University, sharing his love of language, literature, and learning with generations of students. He was also a long-time Journalist for The Macon Telegraph, where his words became part of the community he called home.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Larry found deep meaning in helping people through some of life’s most difficult moments. For more than 30 years, he participated in Alcoholics Anonymous, where he offered encouragement, friendship, and hope to countless people. His commitment to helping others extended beyond AA, including volunteer work in hospitals and other acts of service throughout his community. For Larry, helping others was not simply something he did; it was a way of life.

Larry will be remembered not only for his intelligence and talent as a writer and teacher, but also for his generosity, compassion, and willingness to be there for people when they needed him. His influence lives on in the many students he taught, readers who encountered his columns, people whose lives he touched through AA and volunteer service, and, most importantly, in his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Wanda Eanes; his children, Thomas Eanes-Fennelly, Marie Gibson (Markus Gibson), Joseph Eanes-Fennelly, and Elizabeth Eanes-Fennelly (Rashard); and his grandchildren, Madelyn, Michael, and Raiden.

Larry leaves behind a legacy measured not only in the words he wrote or the lessons he taught, but in the lives he touched. His family, friends, students, colleagues, and the many people he helped will carry his memory forward with gratitude and love.
