With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Laura Deyerle Anderson of Asheville, North Carolina—a remarkable woman whose life was defined by love, independence, and an unwavering dedication to family and community. Born on August 31, 1937, she was the beloved daughter of Peyton Tooke Anderson, Jr. and Katherine McClure Anderson of Macon, Georgia. Her father, a distinguished newspaper publisher and philanthropist, instilled in her a deep appreciation for storytelling and service.
Deyerle carried this legacy forward with a passion for journalism, making her mark at The Macon Telegraph and News, where her keen intellect and dedication shone. Throughout her life, she exemplified grace, poise, and resilience, touching the lives of those around her with kindness and unwavering commitment.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Russell Reid Hanson, Jr., of Auburn, Alabama; her grandchildren: Laura Katherine Hanson (Frank) Moreland, Leah Deyerle Hanson (Justin) Nguyen, Dr. Peyton Reid Hanson, Evan Russell (Devon) Wahl, Julia Lynn Wahl, and Elisabeth Deyerle Hanson (Brett) Pardue; and four great-grandchildren: Reese Anderson Moreland, Emmeline Betty Nguyen, Parker William Nguyen, and Blakely Adelaide Wahl.
She is also lovingly remembered by her cousins: Denny O’Callaghan (Samuel P.) Jones, Walter Mettauer (Carlene) Massey III of Macon, Georgia; Elaine Massey (Tom) McCraken of Denver, Colorado; Joseph Tooke Massey of Atlanta, Georgia; and Peyton Edmond Massey of Chattanooga, Tennessee; as well as her nephews and niece: Joshua Peyton (Sarah) Bleibtreu, Adam David (Suzanne) Bleibtreu, Jason Jeremiah (Rebecca) Bleibtreu, and Sarah Katherine Bleibtreu.
She was preceded in death by her son, Peyton Anderson Hanson; her daughter, Laura Turea Hanson Wahl; her sister, Katherine McClure Anderson; and her aunt, Laura Nelle Anderson O’Callaghan.
A private graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on April 4 at Riverside Cemetery in Macon, Georgia, to honor Deyerle’s memory. Following the service, visitation will take place at 12:30 p.m. at the Shirley Hills family home of Anderson and Keri Jones.
