Kay Sconyers Moore passed away Thursday, March 19, surrounded by her loving family after an extended illness. Kay was the daughter of William Chandler Sconyers and Catherine Kirk Heyward Sconyers of Savannah, Georgia. Kay was a graduate of Savannah High School and attended Armstrong College before marrying and moving to Macon in 1963.
A cradle Episcopalian, Kay attended St. John’s Episcopal Church in Savannah before joining St. Paul Episcopal Church in Macon where she was a devoted member for over 60 years. She served on the vestry for many years where she was involved in several of the church’s renovation projects. Kay was always quick to lend a hand whether it was needlepointing kneelers or restoring church stain-glass windows. She developed lifelong friendships through the church that she treasured throughout her life especially Jane Lucas and Eileen Mitchell.
During the late 70’s Kay started a business with her friend, Lester Mallary, and the two ran an interior business, Cabin Creek, out of the Mallary’s boathouse on the Ocmulgee River riverbank. Kay was also a published author writing a historical memoir of her life growing up on an uninhabited Hilton Head Island titled “Before the Bridge”.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband of forty years, Dr. Ernest L. Moore, Jr (D.D.); husband, Morris Gene Hutchinson (Hutch); her brother, William C. Sconyers Jr; daughter-in-law, Lisa Moore; and former son-in- law, A.J. Swann III.
Kay was a member of Town and Country Garden Club and Idle Hour Golf and Country Club. Kay and D.D. enjoyed many years involved with the Macon Civic Club performing in the annual show supporting Macon area charities. Kay was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She is survived by her six children: Lee Moore of Delray Beach, Florida; Craig Moore of Athens, Georgia; Ashley Severance and Gwen (Jim) Wilson of Macon; Wade (Judy) Moore of Greensboro, Georgia and Holly (Bob) McManus of Knoxville, Tennessee. Fabulous Grandchildren: Albert Swann (Caroline), Mallary Williams (Sam), Chandler Severance, Morgan McFadden (Will), Kaiser Swann, Clay McManus (Ashley), Heyward Severance, Walton Moore, Hunter Moore (Bela), Claire Moore, Wade Zaninovich (Andrew), and Reid Wilson & ten terrific great-grandchildren. Kay is also survived by her cousin Patsy Hodge (Frank) of Bluffton, SC and her niece, Dr. Lisa Coplan (Michael) of Baltimore, MD. The family is grateful for the loving care and the friendship with their mother by Regina Childs and all the fine staff at Carlyle Place.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 23, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The family will greet friends after the service at the home of Gwen and Jim Wilson. If so desired, the family ask for memorials to be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 735 College Street, Macon, Ga. 31201 or to the charity of one’s choice.
