Kathleen Maxfield

Kathleen Gallagher Maxfield of Macon, Georgia, widow of Alcee' F. Maxfield, died on Thursday, December 27, 2012. Funeral services and burial will be held at Graceland Cemetery in Lake Charles, Louisiana. A reception will be hosted by family and friends this Tuesday, January 1, 2013, from noon until 3PM at Mrs. Maxfield's home at 536 Shadow Moss Drive. A native of Graceville, Minnesota, Mrs. Maxfield had lived in Macon since 1965. She was the daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth Robertson Gallagher of Graceville. Educated at St. Mary's Academy and the Graceville Public Schools, she was a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science Degree and the degree of Master of Arts in Medical Social Work. Mrs. Maxfield also did graduate work at the Mayo Clinic. For more than 20 years, Mrs. Maxfield was employed by the American National Red Cross and held posts during World War II in military hospitals in the United States and after the war, at 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany and at the 98th General Hospital, the Medical Center for the European Area, located in Munich. In 1950, during the Korean War, she became the Field Director in charge of the Red Cross program at Tokyo Army Hospital and also served briefly in the 8228 Mobile Army Surgical Hospital near the front lines in Korea. Returning to the United States in 1952, Mrs. Maxfield became an Assistant Director Service in Military and Veterans Hospitals in St. Louis, Missouri, also served on the National Headquarters staff of the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C., and later in the Southeastern Area Office in Atlanta, supervising the Red Cross program in military and veterans hospitals in ten Southeastern states. Mrs. Maxfield was a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers, a life member of the Louisiana Lions League from Crippled Children, a member of the Macon Council on World Affairs, the League of Women Voters, and the American Association of University Women. She was a long-time volunteer and former member of the Board of Directors of the Macon Chapter of the American Red Cross and a volunteer and member of the Board of Directors of Friends of the Library. Survivors include two nieces, Patricia Gallagher King of Norman, Oklahoma and Molly Gallagher of New Orleans, Louisiana; a nephew, Michael R. Gallagher of Las Cruces, New Mexico. By marriage, she is survived by Maryann Monk of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Albert C. Maxfield of Sulphur, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, a Lt. Colonel with the U.S. First Army, a veteran of the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and later the State Secretary of the Lions of Georgia.
