Judy Murphey, 64, died at her home on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 following a courageous fight against cancer. Born in Wading River, New York, on December 6, 1945, she was a graduate of Port Jefferson High School. Later she graduated from Transylvania University, after which she taught high school in Lexington, Kentucky. She also did social work with DFCS both in New York City, and then after moving to Macon with her husband in 1970. She was the co-owner of an interior design firm in Macon and worked for over 30 years as an interior designer before retiring in September 2008. She was a member of the International Society of Interior Design. An early advocate of preserving Macon's historic built environment, she served on the Board of the Macon Heritage Foundation as well as the Vineville Neighborhood Association. She was a sustaining member of The Junior League of Macon, and a member of The National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. She was also active in the Magnolia Garden Club in Macon. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Lee Murphey, daughters Jennifer (Kevin) Fussell of Winston-Salem, NC, and Leslie (Ben) Browning of Marietta, GA, two grandsons, Hudson Fussell and Matthew Browning, a sister, Mimi Averill of Atlanta, GA., nephews, Clay (Lynn) Murphey, and Craig (Dawn) Murphey, both of Macon, GA, niece Amanda Averill of Atlanta, GA, and several great nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held graveside at the Murphey family plot in Riverside Cemetery at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 27, 2010.
