Judge Stephen Phillip Brown died on January 28th, 2021. Due to the pandemic, the family is planning a memorial service in the future.
Born on June 29, 1941 in Birmingham, Alabama to W. Pearsall Brown and Milledge Anderson Brown, Phil had 2 brothers: W. Pearsall Brown (now deceased) and James Hampton Brown (now of Augusta, Georgia). The family lived a full and eventful life among extended family in Perry, GA, and moved to Macon when Phil was 12 years old. A favorite memory of his early life in Macon was a paper route that he had with the Macon Telegraph and News in which he did an early morning delivery to his North Highlands neighborhood. He attended Bibb County schools and graduated from Lanier High School for Boys in 1959, where he was a Captain in the ROTC and a member of Phi Omega Beta social fraternity.
He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, Auburn University, and Mercer University, and received a Juris Doctor degree from Mercer Law School in 1967. Phil began his practice of Law in the litigation department of the Internal Revenue Service in New York City. He returned to Macon to establish his practice with the law firm, Brown, Katz, Flatau, and Hasty. He served 2 terms in the Georgia State legislature as a state representative during the governorship of Jimmy Carter.
In 1994, Phil Brown was appointed Superior Court Judge by Governor Zell Miller and served on the bench until his retirement in 2013. He returned to the practice of Law with the firm of Anderson, Walker, and Reichert until 2019.
Judge Brown was a member of The State Bar of Georgia, the Council of Superior Court Judges, Beyond War Foundation and the Foundation for Global Community where he served on the executive board. An avid reader with an inquisitive mind, his involvement with the Palaver Club was very important to him. He enjoyed lively discussions and debating issues among colleagues.
Phil and his wife of 53 years, Dorothy Ogden Brown, have 3 children and 3 grandchildren: Katherine Brown and her daughter Suzana Brown of North Canton, Ohio; Phillip Brown and his 2 daughters Kieran Brown and Connor Brown of Macon, GA; and Stephen Brown and his wife Hannah Brown of Montpelier, Vermont.
