Joseph Lawrence "Red Dog" Campbell

March 27, 1942 — February 21, 2011

Macon- Joseph Lawrence "Red Dog" Campbell of Macon passed away on February 21, 2011 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Red Dog was a professional firefighter and a member of the Marine Corps. He served in combat in Vietnam and earned a Purple Heart there. He was most well known as being an original member of The Allman Brothers Band Family and was employed as a drum technician by the band for many years. He was also the inspiration for a composite character in the Hollywood film "Almost Famous". He was retired and living in Macon at the time of his passing. Red Dog is survived by brothers, Richard Sanford Campbell and Joseph Lillius Campbell, Jr. and sisters, Phyliss Lucille Betts, Terry Lee Hurley and Jacqueline Marie Bowman and a stepson, Clark Alain Bush. No services will be held and in lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to www.hospiceofcentralgeorgia.com. Register online at www.hartsmort.com.
