Macon- Joseph Paul Powell III, son of the late Christine Harkness Powell, died on January 15, 2010. He was a former editor and the author and co-author of a number of books, articles, and short stories. Beginning his career in investment banking, he later taught on both the high school and post-secondary levels (completing his career in the latter field), and spent many years in publishing, as well. Following high school- during which he was a class officer, beta club officer, Governor's Honors candidate, Georgia Tech Math Scholar, and a Who's Who inductee - Mr. Powell received his undergraduate degree (with a 3.92 GPA) from Mercer University in Macon (including a Christ Church, Oxford, exchange experience) and completed graduate work at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. After the death of his longtime companion, Mr. Powell returned to Macon from Ohio- where he had been a member of the firm South-Western Educational Publishing - and set up his own editing and grant-writing business. Mr. Powell became involved, for a time, with charities and politics in Macon. Among other activities, he was instrumental in helping to house and expand Central City AIDS Network, helped to lead the fight to defeat a City Council attempt to marginalize members of our citizenry, worked with others to establish a PFLAG chapter in Macon and was its treasurer for some years, sat on the advisory board for The Macon Telegraph for several years, and was instrumental in obtaining 501(c)3 status for Congregation Sha'arey Israel (where he was involved for a number of years). Mr. Powell was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Macon and participated in the on-line prayer community of Christ Church, Glendale, Ohio (where he was a member for many years). Mr. Powell was a member of the Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, Ocmulgee Chapter - from which he received the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal in 2007. He was also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, General Edward Dorr Tracy, Jr., Camp No. 18. Mr. Powell died after a long struggle with Myasthenia Gravis, a neurological disease which robbed him of the use of one eye and the ability to be up and about for extended periods - as well as, from the disease's onset, taking away his avid pursuit of riding and showing horses in the United States and in England. There will be a visitation at Hart's Mortuary, Cherry Street, on Friday from 6:00PM until 8:00PM. A funeral service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on College Street on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 11:00AM and a graveside service will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery following. In lieu of flowers, contributions should be directed to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Christ Church-Glendale, The Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, PFLAG, Red Wings Horse Sanctuary (P. O.
