Joe Oliner was born in Hartford, CT in 1919 to the late Herman Oliner and the late Katie Roth Oliner. He was stationed at Camp Wheeler in Macon during the Second World War. He served as Captain in the US Army and served in Europe until victory. He returned to Macon in 1945 and married Norma Koplin, daughter of Sarah and Henry Koplin. He worked at Macon Iron and Paper Stock, with Henry and Sarah and his two brothers-in-law, Myron and Alvin Koplin. In 1956 he headed the company's expansion into General Steel, Inc. a steel service center and fabricator serving as president for over 30 years. Both Macon Iron and General Steel remain family owned and are now operated by a third generation. Joe Oliner served as president of Civitans, Congregation Sha'arey Israel, and the Middle Georgia Federation of Jewish Charities. He is survived by three children; Harriette Carter (Marty), Sandra Otto (Bud) and Henry Oliner (Debbie); four grandchildren; Joshua Carter (Jessica), Laura Piers (Jason), Jeffrey Otto and Natalie Oliner; and one great grandchild Maxwell Fitzgerald Carter. Mr. Oliner is predeceased by his parents, wife, daughter-in-law Renee Saroff Oliner, and sisters, Pearl Frydman and Florence Oliner. Graveside services will be held at 12:00PM Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Sha'arey Israel Cemetery at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rabbi Aaron Rubinstein officiating. Immediately afterwards a reception will be held at Carlyle Place on Zebulon Road, followed by a minyan memorial service.
