John M. Pierovich left for home December 2, 2015. He was born in LA county California on February 14, 1927. John was a World War II veteran and a graduate of Oregon State University In his early career, he worked for both the US Park Service and the US Forest Service. The Park Service assignments were usually in remote road less areas with responsibility primarily in high altitude fire suppression. Frequently it was John, his horse and hand tools to attack the fires when they were small and prevent their growth into a large fire. His assignments with the US Forest Service were in timber, recreation and fire management. He began to concentrate on fire management and served as fire behavior specialist and fire boss on many large fires throughout the Western states. He served in the Forest Service Washington DC office as Assistant Director of Aviation and Fire Management. Due to increasing concerns about the impact of smoke from wildfires and prescribed fire on health, visibility and highway safety, a research program was established at the Southern Forest Fire Laboratory at Macon, GA to address those concerns and John was assigned as Program Manager. The result of this work is the definitive Smoke Management Guidebook still in use today.. He was preceded in death by wife Linda Comer Shelton Pierovich. He is survived by sons Frank M. of Everett, WA, David D. of Spring Hill, Fl, Douglas A. of Dallas, OR and David L. of San Diego, CA.
