John Satterfield McCord, Jr., 76, of Macon, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2024. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2024, in the Chapel of Hart’s at the Cupola, with Reverend Harriette Simmons officiating. The family will greet friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Methodist Children’s Home, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.
Son of the late John Satterfield McCord, Sr. and Mac “Bower” Lawson Macfey McCord, John was born in Blakley, Georgia on March 8, 1948. He was a 1967 graduate of Mark Smith High School and furthered his education at Mercer University. After two years, he followed his entrepreneurial spirit, by opening Satterfield's Barbeque, which he owned for 36 years. He also owned Fish & Pig on Lake Tobesofkee, where he remained for 20 years until his retirement.
John's passion for the culinary arts saw him become an esteemed member of the National Caterers Association and a valued board member and advisor for Korbel Wines. His expertise and charisma even captured the attention of the Discovery Channel, which featured him in a charcoal commercial.
Collecting pig artifacts brought joy to John, reflecting his love for cooking and his restaurant's namesake. He loved to travel and experience new cuisines, he always returned home with stories to share and new dishes to try.
John is survived by his nieces and nephews: Jimmy Hill, Fraser Gordy, Betsy Colquitt, Frederick McCord Jr, Elizabeth McCord Kelleher, John Brown, Jessica Shirley, and Julie Harris; and his former wife, Patty Thorne.
In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his siblings, Beth Brown and Lawson Hill.
