John Wesley Marbut, Jr.

John W. Marbut, Jr. died Monday, September 20, 2010. Mr. Marbut was born in Atlanta but lived in Macon most of his life. He was the son of the late John Wesley Marbut and Dorothy Davis Marbut. Mr. Marbut graduated from Lanier High School and was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Industrial Management and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He then served in the United States Navy.

After finishing his service in the Navy, Mr. Marbut came to Macon and went to work for Marbut and Company, later becoming its president. He was a member of the Young Presidents' Organization where he served on a committee researching Native American culture. He served on the Board of Directors of the Macon American Red Cross, the Georgia Industrial Home, and the C&S Bank of Atlanta. Mr. Marbut was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church serving on the Vestry and on many committees.

John Marbut was an avid golfer and excelled at it, being a member of the planning committee when the Walker Cup was played in Atlanta. He was a member of ldle Hour Country Club where he won the Peach Blossom tournament, and was a member of the U. S. Closed. He also belonged to Peachtree Golf Club in Atlanta, and Pine Valley Golf Club in New Jersey. Mr. Marbut's passion was golf. Upon his retirement, he also spent much of his time in pursuit of painting and enjoying sailing, skiing and travel.

Mr. Marbut is survived by his wife, Mary Lowe Marbut and his two daughters and their families: Barbara and her husband Andy McKay, John Wesley, Ann Dixon, Charles Porter and Dorothy Marbut McKay all of Kentucky; and Kenson Marbut, Lydia Golden Pound Harrell and her husband Andrew, and Katherine Cox Pound all of North Carolina. The mother of his daughters, Katie Dickey Marbut of Atlanta, survives him, as does his brother, Scott Marbut and his family of Tennessee and Georgia.

Also surviving Mr. Marbut are his step-children and their families: Edward Lowe and Virginia Kinman and their daughter Mary Beth of Virginia; Lee and Carter Bailey and their children Joe, Kinman and Mary Lowe of Atlanta, and Jim Kinman and his daughter Carrie of Macon.

The family is grateful to caregivers Tammy Goodwin, Velma Bryant, Tyrone Johnson and Veronica Namata.

Memorial services for Mr. Marbut will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at Christ Church with the Reverend Harriette Simmons officiating. Burial will be private at Riverside Cemetery. The family will greet friends Tuesday from 5:00PM to 7:00PM at the residence. The family suggest memorials be given to Christ Church, 582 Walnut Street, Macon 31201, Wesley Glen Ministries, 3711 Agape Village Rd., Macon 31210 or to the organization of the donor's choosing.
