John William Gibson Sr., 88, of Macon, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2025. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, in the Chapel of Hart’s at the Cupola, with Reverend Michael Fuller officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will be private at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
Son of the late Horace and Sarah Gibson, John was born in Luverne, Alabama on October 8, 1936. Beginning his career with the Macon Police Department in 1962, John quickly distinguished himself as a capable and diligent detective. In recognition of his exemplary service, he was honored with the Policeman of the Year Award in 1967. Through the years, he ascended the ranks, promoted to lieutenant and eventually became director of Central Records. After a distinguished career, he hung up his badge in 1998, having earned the respect and admiration of his peers. Yet, his drive to serve led him to the Bibb County Sheriff's Department, where he continued to contribute to public safety as a forensic fingerprint examiner.
Beyond his law enforcement career, John had a deep passion for music. At Bill Hardin Music, he shared his talent for playing string instruments, shaping the lives of numerous students until 2020. His musical journey also intertwined with his spiritual life. As a dedicated member of first Mabel White Baptist Church and later Rock Springs Church, John raised his voice in praise both as a choir member and music leader. He played vital roles in the religious community, serving as an elder, a deacon, and a beloved substitute teacher for the J.C. Johnson Sunday School Class. His commitment to faith extended into teaching the Royal Ambassadors and engaging in a longstanding Jail Ministry for 37 years, touching lives through his weekly talks at the YDC on Riggins Mills Road.
John's involvement in community organizations reflected his multifaceted interests. He was a proud Mason and Scottish Rite Member, demonstrating his commitment to brotherhood and service. His affiliation with the Macon Fraternal Order of Police showcased his enduring bond with those who served to protect. In his leisure time, his love for music became a source of comfort and joy in local nursing homes, where he often performed with his guitar and banjo, bringing smiles to many faces.
John leaves behind a tapestry of memories woven through years of devotion to service, education, and faith. He walked through life guided by a deep sense of duty, a love for music, and a heart for worship.
