John DuPree

John Thomas DuPree, Jr. passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 11th at Pine Pointe Hospice. John was born on July 28, 1950, in Macon, Georgia, the son of the late John Thomas DuPree, Sr., MD, and the late Eudora McClain DuPree.

From an early age, John had a love for sports, the outdoors, and spending time with family and friends. At just 12 years old, he held the state record for the 50-meter butterfly in his age group. His passion for athletics continued throughout his adolescence, including playing as starting quarterback and linebacker for Mark Smith High School.

John graduated from high school in 1968 and went on to attend the University of Georgia in Athens (graduating class of 1977) where his lifelong love for the Georgia Bulldogs began.

John built a distinguished career spanning more than 40 years in the mortgage banking industry. He began learning the business with several notable mortgage firms in the Atlanta and Columbia areas before joining Freddie Mac, a national Government-Sponsored Enterprise, in its Atlanta office in 1985.

Over the next 22 years, John dedicated himself to marketing and sales of Freddie Mac products and services, as well as purchase contract negotiations. He worked closely with a wide range of residential mortgage bankers and lenders throughout Georgia, the Carolinas, and Alabama. John was deeply respected and genuinely loved by the CEOs, secondary marketing executives, and employees of the banks, savings and loans, and mortgage lending institutions throughout his territory.

Throughout his career, John earned numerous accolades for his efforts to help his clients grow their mortgage businesses and expand homeownership throughout the Southeast region served by Freddie Mac. His career coincided with a remarkable period of growth in both Freddie Mac and the mortgage industry.

John also maintained close professional relationships with the Mortgage Bankers Association of America, the Mortgage Bankers Association of the Carolinas, the Mortgage Bankers Association of Georgia, and the Mortgage Bankers Association of Alabama. Following his years with Freddie Mac, John remained involved in the mortgage industry until his retirement.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, John's greatest pride was his family. He was the father of five daughters. He instilled in his girls a love of the outdoors, music, the Georgia Bulldogs, and genuine human connection. He taught them the importance of enjoying life, loving deeply, and cherishing the people around them.

One of John's most cherished roles was that of Grandfather. Affectionately known as “Grandaddy,” he adored his two granddaughters, Cecilia and Charlotte, and treasured every moment he shared with them.

John is survived by his sisters, Nancy DuPree (Rob Rodatus) and Donna Valbuena (Joe), Susan Andrews DuPree (sister-in-law); daughters, Leanna DuPree, Rebecca DuPree, Marlys Windham (Dylan), McClain DuPree, and Georgia DuPree; granddaughters, Cecilia Matricciano and Charlotte Windham; and the mother of his children, Teresa “Tree” Hammett DuPree. John is predeceased by his sister and brother in-law Margaret Ann and George “Sporty” Carswell, and brother George William DuPree.

John will be remembered for his deep love of friends and family, his generous spirit, his passion for sports and the outdoors, his devotion to the Georgia Bulldogs, and the many lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey. His legacy lives on in the family he loved so deeply and in all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Hart’s Mortuary at the Cupola.
