Joan was born October 18, 1932 in Washington, D.C., where she attended school but spent "war years" in Seattle, Washington, while her father was in the United States Coast Guard. She graduated from Coolidge High School in Washington, D.C., then attended Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, for two years where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority.

Joan married Paul Roger Evans on August 25, 1956. She was an outstanding Air Force wife, a constant companion and comfort to Paul; the epitome of a loving woman. She was active in Officers' Wives Clubs, enjoyed bowling, and while in Warner Robins, Georgia, she was active in the Newcomer's Club, Middle Georgia Quilt Guild and played bridge regularly with friends. In addition to being a skilled quilter, she also was an excellent seamstress. Joan was ordained as an elder in the Presbyterian Church around 1974 at Oak Hills Presbyterian Church in San Antonio, Texas. She was also employed as a secretary in many places, depending on where her husband was stationed.

Joan is survived by her husband, Paul R. Evans, Chaplain, Colonel, USAF, Retired of Macon; daughters, Lauren Huff (Ben) of Alexandria, Virginia, and Leslie Adams of Wichita Falls, Texas; brother, Paul Graham Mangum (Adele) of Derry, New Hampshire; grandchildren, Matthew Huff (Jessamyn) of Hampton, Virgiania, Kristyn Gibson (Chris) of Winston Salem, North Carolina, Katherine and Elizabeth Adams of Wichita Falls, Texas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is predeceased by her parents, Percy Graham Mangum and Alice McWhirt Mangum; and son-in-law, Stephen B. Adams.
