Jo Ann Washburn Martin

Jo Ann Washburn Martin 3/20/42-3/25/17 Jo Martin, age 75, passed away on Saturday March 25,2017 surrounded by her family. She was born on 3/20/1942 in Macon, Ga, daughter of the late Hubert Clatus and Dorothy Harvey Washburn. She attended Jones Co. High School where she graduated in 1960. During her high school years, she helped lead the Lady Greyhounds basketball team to two state championship titles in 1958 and 1960. She was one of the first young women to implement the "jump shot" which was previously only seen in the men's games. Her # 54 was retired at JCHS. She later married the late James Kenneth Martin, her high school sweetheart. They resided in Gray, Ga. their entire life, raising their two sons, Keith and Kerry. She was employed by the City of Gray in the Clerk's Office and during that time completed her B.S. and M.Ed. at Ga. College. For the next 30 years, she was teacher and counselor at Gray Elementary School until her retirement. She influenced the lives of countless students, teachers, and administrators. She was a devoted wife and mother and it was obvious to those around her that family was precious to her. She was a longtime member of Haddock Baptist Church. Gardening and woodworking were favorite hobbies and she enjoyed her friends in the Gray Garden Club. She loved to travel, especially to the beach with her family. Her dog, Scooter, was a close companion in her later years. Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her sister, Linda Wharam. Survivors include her sons, Dr. A. Keith (Patti) Martin of Macon and Kerry (Natalie) Martin of Cumming; grandchildren, Taylor, Clay, Alec, Sierra and Nicholas Martin; brother, Clay (Mary Ann) Washburn; sister, Suzy Meybohm and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday March 29 at 12:00 at Haddock Baptist Church and the family will greet friends at the church one hour before the service. Dr. Ron McClung will officiate. Burial will be private. The family suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Jo Martin to the Spina Bifida Association of Ga., 5072 Bristol Industrial Way, Buford, Ga. 30518 or to the charity of your choice. Hart's Mortuary in Gray has charge of arrangements.
