Jo Andrea Murphy, a lifelong resident of Macon, departed this life on the evening of July 9, 2026 after suffering a cardiac arrest at Navicent Medical Center, where she had been hospitalized several days earlier with a perforated duodenal ulcer.
Jo, who never married, devoted her life to the service of others. She had a Master’s Degree in Nursing and spent part of her career teaching nursing students. However, when her elderly parents became ill, she moved in with them, dedicating the next several years of her life to their care. Her mother, Fannie Lou Ellis Murphy, died in 1993. Her father, Groze Murphy Sr., passed away in 1996.
A lifelong Georgia Bulldogs fan, Jo was also a loving sister to her brothers Harvey Jack Murphy, M.D., Jon Richard Murphy and Groze “Chipper” Murphy, Jr. She was also a “fun aunt” to her various nieces and nephews, keeping them entertained throughout life with her irreverent wit and wry observations about people and life in general.
In her later years, her favorite companions were her dog Judy and her books. An avid reader, she never lost her inquisitive nature.
Jo was predeceased by her parents and all three of her brothers, as well as Richard Todd Murphy, her favorite nephew. She is survived by nephews Mark Murphy, M.D., Andrew Jackson Murphy, Trey Murphy and Ryan Murphy and nieces Jennifer Murphy McCollum, Tara Murphy Reeves and Kimberly Murphy Moseley, as well as several of their children. In addition, her sister-in-law Cynthia Stanton Murphy Burns has been instrumental in arranging for Jo’s care and comfort over the past few years.
Funeral services will be held at the historic Mountain Creek Baptist Church in Pendergrass, Georgia in Jackson County on Saturday, July 18 at 1 P.M. Burial will be in the Mountain Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her parents.
Any remembrances should be sent to in care of the Mountain Creek Baptist Church in Pendergrass.
