Jewel Marie Nugent Futrell

Jewel Marie Nugent Futrell was born in Grant Parish, LA on the 29th of December, 1924, and passed peacefully on the 6th of January, 2022, having just celebrated her 97th birthday. A memorial service to celebrate her life will occur at a future date, with interment at Oak Grove Cemetery, Bentley LA.

Jewel was an avid reader, often choosing books on subjects that might not align with her personal philosophy, validating the importance of hearing both sides of a topic. She was proud of the fact that she was a member of the “make do generation”, as well as the “greatest generation”. While living in Shreveport, LA, she was a faithful member of Broadmoor Methodist Church, a hospital volunteer for over 25 years, a member of the Women’s Republican Club, and various book clubs. She was a wonderful and curious cook, often trying out new recipes to the delight of her family and friends.

Jewel is predeceased by her husband, Lester L. Futrell, her parents, William Wyatt Nugent and Dollie Mae Futrell Nugent, her sister, Verlene Nugent Bowman, and brother-in-law, Horace S. Bowman.

Jewel is survived by her daughter, Nancy F. McDowell, and son-in-law, Robert McDowell, Macon GA, and her son, Lester Keith Futrell, and daughter-in-law, Linda Futrell, Natchez MS and their children Justin and Melisa. She is also survived by her niece, Susan Bowman Hetzel (Gary), their children, Robyn Hetzel Polk (Tom) and their children Sidney and Maren; and Ryan R. Hetzel (Patsy) and their son Tatum.

The family would like to offer sincere appreciation to the Amedisys Hospice Staff of Macon GA for their incredible devotion and care during Jewel’s last few months, especially Robin, Becca, Scott, Pam, and Nadine. Other special care givers included Eva, Deborah and Antoinette.

The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to their local Hospice programs of choice.
