Jean "Jeannie" P. Cox

Jean died peacefully at home on November 22, 2018. She was 92 years old. Daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth Antink of Bracknell Berkshire, England; she was born in London, England on September 13, 1926. She embarked to America on May 20, 1946 aboard the John Ericcson Swedish Luxury Liner and arrived May 30, 1946. Jean became an American citizen in 1960.

She was an English WWII bride and lived in Tampa, FL where she raised her two children, Stephen C. Walker and Melanie Walker Wheeler. She was very active in her church, Palma Ceia Methodist. While in Tampa, she was in the Tampa Teapots (British Club), various garden clubs, was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and volunteer, and volunteered as a Gray Lady in her children’s school.

Jean volunteered for 35 years in the Red Cross, both in Tampa and Macon. While in the Red Cross, she worked on the Blood Mobile and worked fires. She was a member of the Homemakers Club for 36 years, president 5 years. She was active in Shurlington UMC where she was president of the UMW for 2 years and circle leader for 3 years. Upon relocating to Jones County, she moved her membership to Gray UMC. There she was VP of UMW for 3 years and Program Resource Coordinator and VP for one year. She gave countless hours to the annual yard sale each year and helped with luncheons. She collected tabs for the Ronald McDonald house. Jean was a silent disciple and was honored with the Special Mission Recognition award.

Additionally, Jean was in the Red Hat Club. She was a member of the American Legion Post #3 for 18 years, VP for 3 years. Upon losing her son in Vietnam, she became very active in the V.A. Vietnam Vets Club #443 for 20 years. Her fellow members fondly called her “Mom.” Jean also volunteered at Theatre Macon as House Manager and worked reservations for 7 years. She and Sandra Livingston started the Crown Jewels British Club in 1969. As a charter member, she was president for 3 years and treasurer for 21 years. Jean was a member of the Pacesetter Club and volunteered at the Veteran’s Hospital in Dublin, GA. She was a world traveler. China was always her favorite place. Her #1 love was for God, her church, family, and friends.

We want to fondly thank Ruby Towles and Annie Lois Gay for almost five years of service taking such good care of Jean and loving her. While in Heartland Hospice, she added more caretakers, Ellen Adams and Rosa Slater who were very kind to her. They were all a God send to us.

Jean was predeceased by her husband, Harvard Bruce Cox; son, Stephen C. Walker; sister, Sylvia Bowditch (John); and parents, Herbert and Elizabeth Antink.

Jean is survived by her devoted daughter, Melanie Walker Wheeler (Len); grandsons Chris Carroll (Chelsea), Bruce Carroll (Hannah), Carl Wheeler (Danielle); granddaughter Carrie Wheeler Thacker (Brandon); great-grandchildren Haydon and Wyatt Caroll, Watson Carl Wheeler, Emma Grace Fraebel, Berkeley and Banks Thacker; and nephew Wayne Bowditch (Freya).

Visitation will be at the Historic Sanctuary at Gray UMC on Monday, November 26, 2018 from 1:00PM to 2:00PM followed by a memorial service at 2:00PM. Burial is private.
