Jean Elsom Hogan

February 13, 1930 — April 5, 2021

Macon

Jean Elsom Hogan, 91, of Macon, died on Monday, April 5, 2021, after a long illness.  A private memorial service will be held on Tuesday April 13, 2021 at Riverside Cemetery with the Reverend Bryan Hinson officiating.

Mrs. Hogan was born in Birmingham, Alabama on February 13, 1930 to Mary Etheland Penny and Floyd Howard Elsom.   She attended many different schools as a child, moving frequently with her father, an electrical engineer, whose work took him to Chattanooga, Tennessee, Denver, Colorado, and the state of Washington where he worked on the Grand Coulee Dam.

She came to Macon to attend Wesleyan College where she was May Queen and a member of many clubs including the Naiads Swim Team.  Although she had planned to major in Chemistry, a chance of enrollment in an art class revealed her true calling because, as she said, “suddenly everything just made sense.”  After graduating with honors in 1951, she married Dr. Jasper Hogan.  They loved travelling, collecting antiques, and entertaining friends and family.

She was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the Town and Country Garden Club and the Junior League of Macon, which she served as President.

A talented interior decorator and an accomplished painter, she and her best friend, Mary Sheridan, opened Valentino’s Antiques and Interior Design where they worked to make their clients’ homes a little more beautiful. The center pieces she created were always clever and extraordinary.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years in 2008, and her son, Dr. Thomas Morgan Hogan in 1985.   She is survived by her sons, Hunter Norton Hogan and his wife, Anna,  of Macon and Taylor Elsom Hogan and his wife, Cindy, of Boston, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Allyson Hogan Kaess (Alex), of Belmont, California, Elizabeth Jean Hogan (Liz), of Redwood, California, and Hunter Alexander Hogan, of Macon; and her former daughter-in-law, Sharon Fry (David), of Augusta, Georgia.

Her family wishes to thank all of her caregivers, especially Heartland Hospice for their extraordinary care and kindness.
