Janie "Kathy" Kathleen Atkins

July 7, 1951 — May 21, 2024

Macon

Ms. Janie Kathleen “Kathy” Atkins, 72, of Macon, passed away after a short illness, Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

Kathy was born in Eatonton, Georgia, and graduated from Jasper County High School in 1969.  After graduation, she moved to Macon and enrolled in the Crandall Business School.  Soon after, she began a 30-year career with the City of Macon, starting out first as a police dispatcher and later as a code enforcement officer.  She flourished in her work and credited her police training with her characteristic cool headedness in any situation.  Kathy was a wonderful cook and her sister often called her “Julia Childs”.  A talented guitarist and singer, Kathy had a passion for all kinds of music and frequently shared her music in local shows.  Kathy loved her family and especially adored her nephew, Brad, and cherished the time she spent with him.  Also dear to her heart was Ms. Bessie Evans of Monticello, who lived in with the family starting when Kathy was just a toddler. She cared for the two sisters while their parents worked, and they have remained close to her throughout their whole lives.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, James Mathis and Ida Mae (Davis) Atkins; her infant brother; and her nephew, Brad Benton. She is survived by her sister, Judy Hill (Don) of Lake Oconee; and several cousins.
